A research project from University of Quebec in Montreal, Canada

In addition to tics, at least half of children living with Tourette syndrome also deal with frequent, uncontrollable bouts of anger. These are called rage attacks or explosive outbursts. Those outbursts are often described by children and their parents as the most disruptive symptom associated with Tourette syndrome. While explosive outbursts affect a significant proportion of youth living with Tourette syndrome, this phenomenon has received little attention from the scientific community so far. Therefore, this project aims to improve our knowledge of explosive outbursts and has three specific objectives:

  1. Investigate the factors that lead to the occurrence of explosive outbursts
  2. Better understand the impact of explosive episodes on family functioning
  3. Study the evolution of explosive episodes over time

This project will provide a better understanding of the individual factors that may contribute to the occurrence of explosive outbursts, which could lead to new avenues of intervention to reduce the frequency and intensity of such outbursts. Additionally, by getting an in-depth understanding of the different dimensions of family functioning possibly affected by these outbursts, we may be able to identify new components for interventions to manage explosive outbursts, equip parents to deal with parental stress, and build on available resources and support programs.

All participants will be entered into a draw to win one of 12 Amazon gift cards, worth $50 Canadian Dollars each.
