Join us for an evening presentation about Pathological Demand Avoidance
Wednesday 8 November 2023
8pm
PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) is widely understood to be a profile on the autism spectrum, involving the avoidance of everyday demands and the use of ‘social’ strategies as part of this avoidance.
We are delighted to welcome guest speaker Karen Stepanova, who has personal experience with autistic young people and those with a PDA profile
"I am a late diagnosed autistic/adhd parent to two autistic young people, one of whom has a PDA profile. My background is in teaching in adult and further education and I hold a non exec directorship with the Parental Engagement Network CIC and I am the Send link governor at my local mainstream academy.
Over the past few years I have learned first hand the challenges parent’s face when working with school’s and local authorities in trying to secure an appropriate education for a PDA young person. In order to better understand how to support my child I deep dived into the world of SEN law and volunteered for a charity on the tribunal helpline. I spent some time in advocacy supporting parent’s but my true passion is in teaching and I have found my vocation in delivering training for The PDA Society, mainly to schools, in order to raise awareness and understanding of how best to support a PDA young person whether within a school setting or out of school. I passionately believe the approaches we describe in our training help to broaden the understanding for professionals supporting a PDA person and also if implemented with trust and authenticity lead to a more neuro-affirmative way of supporting all neurodivergent young people".
Tickets cost £5 each.
